Safety in irked numbers

I am inordinately pleased to not be the only one that experiences this particular form (and level) of library frustration.

This is classic user experience design failure. It used to be common for automatic tellers to be designed poorly so that people would often leave their cards behind accidentally (i.e. it would not return the card before asking if you wanted another transaction and giving the money; they didn't have the ring of LEDs around the card slot to get your attention either). I guess they haven't improved the design because you've "paid" for the value on the cards already; it's not like there'd be a run on the bank. Why can't the people who make copier card readers get it together with the copier makers to make an integrated solution that works?
